By the end of the day, your skin has been exposed to dirt, oil and makeup for several hours. This is why your nighttime skin care regimen is so important. You don’t have to have a complex system for your skin each night, but it should be thorough and consistent.

Step 1: Remove Your Makeup

To get rid of any makeup on your face, use an oil-based makeup remover. You can either use makeup removing wipes or you can put the remover on a cotton ball to use on your face. Either way, be careful when removing your makeup and be gentle on your skin. Don’t tug your skin or rub too hard.

Step 2: Wash Your Face

Whether or not you wore makeup throughout the day, you still need to wash your face each night. Use a cleanser that’s formulated for your skin type. Massage the cleanser into your skin for 10 to 30 seconds; the dirtier your face is, the more time you should spend cleansing it. When you’re finished, dab your face dry with a clean, soft towel. It’s best to use a fresh towel or wash cloth each time you dry your face.

Step 3: Remove Any Leftover Makeup

Sometimes you may think you got rid of all the makeup you were wearing, only to see some black streaks under your eyes after washing your face. To wipe away the leftover makeup, put a bit of petroleum jelly on a cotton swab and gently swab away the remaining color.

Step 4: Apply Moisturizer

Apply plenty of moisturizer to your face and neck. The moisturizer should be matched to your skin type. Also, most people use thicker moisturizer at night than during the day because it has to last while you sleep. Additionally, you may want to swipe on some moisturizing lip balm.

Step 5: Apply Eye Cream

Every good skincare regime should include eye cream. Look for eye cream that’s fortified and prevents both wrinkles and under eye circles. Don’t use your regular moisturizer under and around your eyes. The skin in this area is thinner and more sensitive than the rest of your skin, so you need the right type of moisturizer.

Step 6: Get Some Sleep!

One of the best ways to keep your skin looking its best is to get plenty of rest. No matter how great your skincare regimen is each night, you won’t have the best skin possible without a good night’s sleep.

It’s important to follow your skincare regimen every single night. Even one day of skipping a cleansing or sleeping in your makeup can dry out your skin and affect your appearance.
