As tissues in the neck lose elasticity over time, skin in or immediately around the neck may sag and develop into what’s commonly referred to as a “double chin” (submental fullness). It may be caused by age-related changes to the skin or accumulated weight. Hereditary factors may also play a role. Until recently, the most effective way to deal with excess fat under the chin was to have a surgical procedure called liposuction. A newer, less-invasive solution is Kybella, the only injectable FDA-approve treatment for excess chin fat.

What is Kybella?
Kybella (ATX-101/deoxycholic acid) is an FDA-approved treatment designed to destroy fat cells underneath the chin. It’s a synthetic form of deoxycholic acid, a molecule that naturally occurs in the body and helps with the breakdown of fat from the foods you eat.
How Does Kybella Work?
Kybella works by destroying the cell membrane of fat cells in the chin. Doing so causes the cell to lose its fat contents. The fatty deposit from the cell is then metabolized by the body, not stored in a cell. The Newport Beach Kybella session is performed in a comfortable treatment room. During the initial consultation, the specific area to be treated will be determined and a recommendation will be made for how many treatments will likely be needed to see the desired results.
Each Newport Beach Kybella session will involve a series of tiny injections applied underneath the chin. For instance, a patient with more significant submental fatty tissue may require up to 50-60 injections during a session. Milder deposits of fat under the chain may be treated with as little as 10-20 injections per session. The average number of injections per session is 20-30. A local anesthetic is sometimes added to the injection to make the procedure as comfortable as possible.
What Happens After Treatment?
There is no downtime following a Kybella session. As fat cells are “destroyed” and eliminated, the skin in the treated area becomes firmer and tighter. As a result, the chin has a more contoured look. The results from treatment are gradual and progressive. Individuals who have the Newport Beach Kybella treatment may also experience improvements in self-esteem and similar benefits due to an improved facial appearance from a chin that’s better defined.
How Many Treatments Are Necessary?
Positive results may be seen after one or two Kybella treatments for some patients. It will take time for the fat cells in the chin to dissolve, so follow-up observation is usually recommended to track results and determine if additional injections may be necessary. For maximum benefits, multiple treatments may be recommended. The standard recommendation is six sessions spaced about a month apart to allow the fat cells to be naturally absorbed by the body.
Who Are Ideal Candidates for Kybella Injections?
Kybella is meant to treat small areas of skin in the neck area only. It is not intended for use on other areas of the body. Ideal candidates for the procedure are over the age of eighteen and have excess bulk in the chin that’s caused by excess fat. An examination usually takes place prior to the injection to rule out possible thyroid issues or problems with cervical lymph nodes that may be mistaken as chin fat.
An individual consultation will determine whether or not the treatment is appropriate for you. You will have a chance to ask questions as you receive a detailed explanation of what your session will involve and what results you may experience. Kybella injections may be beneficial for patients who:
- Have not seen results with other attempts to lose chin fat
- Don’t have underlying health issues or excess stretched skin
- Aren’t currently pregnant and are in otherwise good health
While results will vary based on the extent of fat along the chin line and a patient’s overall skin texture and tone, Newport Beach Kybella treatments often produces noticeable results within 4-6 weeks. Experienced results with the injections may last for several years, often meaning less need for touch-up procedures. Risks are minimal. Any bruising or swelling related to the procedure usually goes away within a few days. In several studies involving thousands of patients, approximately 70 percent reported improved emotional and physical results.
